The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government, in continuation of the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Tinubu to pay tribute to Buhari’s life and legacy.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister described Buhari as a statesman who served Nigeria with "dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation."
“In furtherance of the seven days of national mourning declared by Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read.
The public holiday is aimed at providing Nigerians with an opportunity to reflect on Buhari's contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, governance, and national development.
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the statement added.
The government also reminded Nigerians that national flags would continue to fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which runs from Sunday, July 13 to Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The Minister urged citizens to mark the holiday by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion in line with Buhari's vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria.
The Federal Government also extended its condolences to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Buhari’s death was announced by his former aide, Garba Shehu, who confirmed that the former president passed away in a London clinic. His burial, initially scheduled earlier, was postponed to Tuesday, July 15, reportedly due to incomplete paperwork and documentation.
