Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to his decades-long affiliation with the party he helped establish.
In a resignation letter dated July 14 and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Jada Ward 1 in Adamawa State, Atiku cited irreconcilable differences and the current direction of the party as his reasons for departure.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” Atiku stated in the letter.
Atiku also expressed his gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities granted to him over the years, including serving two terms as Nigeria’s Vice President and being the party’s presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 general elections.
His resignation comes at a time when discussions about a possible opposition coalition are intensifying. Reports suggest Atiku has been actively engaging with other political leaders to forge a united front under the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
This development marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape as preparations for the next general elections begin to gather momentum.
