A public affairs analyst, Adeniyi Ifetayo, has said that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is not desperate to cling to power despite the political tension in the state.

Naija News recalls that Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State Assembly were reinstated on September 17, following the suspension of the six-month state of emergency earlier imposed in March.

However, while the lawmakers resumed plenary almost immediately, the governor did not return to office as quickly as his supporters had anticipated. Many of them had stormed the Rivers State Government House expecting his resumption, but they were left disappointed.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme, Ifetayo said Fubara’s decision not to rush back into office shows he is not desperate for power.

He said:

“I don’t see that coming. If you look at it, even when he was called back, if he were someone who is desperate to hold onto power, I’m sure he would have jumped into office immediately but it took him 24–48 hours before he resumed.

“And since the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, said he has forgiven him, let’s see that he has forgiven him indeed and has forgotten about what happened in the past. Maybe they will allow him to run for the second term.”
