Veteran entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy or AreaFada, has recounted a touching encounter with Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing it as one of the most memorable gestures he has ever received.

In a social media post, Charly Boy narrated how Obi unexpectedly called him around 1 a.m. one night, requesting to pay him a visit in the early hours of the morning. Despite his initial hesitation, he agreed.

“By exactly 5:45 a.m., Obi arrived at my house no African time, a man of his word. As I came downstairs, I saw one big Ghana Must Go bag at the entrance of my sitting room. I was wondering what could be inside,” Charly Boy revealed.

The two reportedly spent about two hours discussing politics, family matters, and the state of the nation. When Obi eventually presented the bag, Charly Boy said he was stunned by its contents. Instead of money or expensive items, the bag was filled with traditional foodstuffs.

“Inside the bag were bottles of roasted groundnuts, alligator pepper, kolanuts, pawpaw, oranges, agara, mangoes, bananas and more all handpicked by Obi himself. I couldn’t stop laughing when I opened it,” he recounted with amusement.

When he later called Obi to thank him, the former Anambra governor reportedly replied:
“Senior, I no fit give you money, but I fit give you this one na my hand pick.”

Charly Boy said the gesture left a deep impression on him, describing it as a true show of authenticity and “native intelligence.”

“Sometimes, it’s the little things that remind you life no too hard. The kolanut and bitter kola Obi gave me sweet me pass money,” he added, noting that the encounter made him ride out on his scooter that morning with laughter and joy in his heart.

The media personality concluded by praising Obi’s simplicity and thoughtfulness, suggesting that such acts of humility resonate more with people than grand displays of wealth.
