At least 1,723 healthcare workers have been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023, following relentless Israeli attacks, according to the territory’s Health Ministry.
Munir al-Bursh, Director General of Gaza’s Health Ministry, disclosed the figures in an interview with Al Jazeera, warning that the situation is spiraling into a full-blown humanitarian disaster.
He revealed that 38 hospitals have been attacked by Israeli forces since the conflict erupted, with major facilities such as St John Eye Hospital, al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital, and Sheikh Hamad Hospital in Gaza City now completely out of service.
Al-Bursh further sounded the alarm over Israel’s blockade on aid, particularly fuel supplies critical for hospital operations.
“Hospitals are at risk of shutting down within 48 hours if no petrol is allowed in,” he warned, stressing that the health system is on the brink of total collapse.
The worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza has drawn global concern, with rights groups and international organizations urging immediate intervention to prevent mass deaths due to lack of medical care and supplies.
