ASABA, August 13, 2025 – The upcoming Delta State Environmental Sustainability Award (DSESA) will recognise individuals, communities, and organisations championing environmental protection, as part of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to the environmental pillar of his MORE Agenda.
Speaking on the initiative, Deacon Okezi Odugala, Managing Consultant of Kegala Environmental Consultancy Limited and lead organiser of the awards, said the programme aims to inspire greater environmental responsibility across Delta State through recognition and reward.
“As a civil society leader and environmental consultant, I believe it is time for all Deltans and residents to take ownership of their environment. Government alone cannot carry this burden; we must all become partners in driving positive change,” Odugala stated.
He described the state’s environmental challenges—ranging from indiscriminate waste disposal and blocked waterways to deforestation, pollution, and harmful industrial habits—as alarming. According to him, the growing impact of climate change underscores the urgent need for action.
The maiden edition of the awards, scheduled for September 26, 2025, in Asaba, will feature categories such as:
-
Cleanest Local Government Headquarters

A technical committee, chaired by Delta State NUJ Chairman Comrade Churchill Oyowe, is overseeing the selection process, with nominations currently ongoing. Odugala urged public participation, stressing that the awards will cover both public and private sectors, including oil, hospitality, and business industries.
In a joint statement from Kegala Environmental Consultancy Limited and the Delta State Ministry of Environment, Odugala commended Governor Oborevwori for his leadership, as well as Environment Commissioner Mr. Ejiro Jamani and other stakeholders for working to make Delta a model for environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
He called on communities, organisations, and individuals to support the event, adding: “Together, we can build a cleaner, safer, and healthier Delta State for present and future generations.”
