Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the ruling party as a symbol of failure, pain, and anguish. His resignation was contained in a letter dated July 1, 2025, addressed to the APC Chairman in Ward 8, Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

In the strongly worded letter, Amaechi expressed deep disappointment over what he called the derailment of the APC from the lofty ideals that inspired its formation. He stated that the party no longer represents the hope and aspirations of Nigerians for a better and greater future. Citing a broad consultation process before making his decision, the former governor stressed that it was the appropriate moment to sever ties with a party that has, in his view, become synonymous with national failure and widespread anguish.

He wrote, “After a wide range of consultations, I am convinced that this is the appropriate moment to call it quits as the party has derailed from the lofty ideals that birthed its formation and so, can no longer inspire hopes in Nigeria for a greater future.” Amaechi further revealed that his resignation is part of a broader resolve to align with patriotic Nigerians in a new movement aimed at liberating the country from the stranglehold of misgovernance. “I have therefore, taken a decision to join forces with well-meaning compatriots to start a fresh journey for the liberation of Nigeria,” he affirmed.

This formal resignation comes after Amaechi had earlier declared publicly that he was no longer a member of the APC, a statement that signaled his growing disillusionment with the party’s trajectory under the current leadership. His departure is particularly significant given his role as one of the key architects of the APC’s formation and its historic victory in 2015 that ended the 16-year rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Beyond his resignation, Amaechi is already playing a strategic role in the opposition coalition that has formed with the aim of unseating President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 general elections. As one of the most prominent political figures from the South-South region, his exit from the APC is expected to significantly influence political realignments, especially as the country inches closer to the next electoral season.

Observers believe that his departure might trigger a ripple effect within the APC, possibly encouraging other dissatisfied party members to exit, particularly those disenchanted with the administration's handling of national issues. Amaechi's political capital, rooted in his experience as a two-term governor, a former minister, and a formidable APC presidential aspirant in 2023, positions him as a critical player in shaping the future of Nigeria's opposition politics.

His resignation letter, laced with criticism and a call for national rescue, has already sparked conversations within political circles and among citizens who have expressed growing frustration with governance in Nigeria. While Amaechi has yet to officially declare his next political platform, there is strong speculation that he will be instrumental in consolidating a viable alternative to the APC ahead of 2027.

Amaechi's move reflects the deepening cracks within the ruling party and adds momentum to the opposition’s efforts to present a united front capable of challenging the incumbent government. As the political landscape continues to evolve, his next steps will be closely watched, not just by political stakeholders but by a Nigerian populace eager for change and effective leadership.
