Awka, Nigeria – Naija Blog – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it describes as an assassination attempt on its governorship candidate in the forthcoming November 8, 2025 Anambra State election, Chief Jude Ezenwafor.
According to a statement issued on Sunday, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP said the attack was a politically motivated move by desperate forces unsettled by Ezenwafor’s growing popularity.
“After a critical analysis of the violent incident, the PDP believes that certain interests, who are clearly uncomfortable with the growing support for our candidate, are desperate to prevent him from contesting the election,” the statement read.
Ezenwafor Reportedly Ambushed in Abuja
Chief Jude Ezenwafor was allegedly ambushed by gunmen in Abuja while returning from an appointment. Though details of the incident remain sketchy, the PDP claims it has received intelligence on further plots to discredit the candidate.
“Our Party has also been made aware of other plots by some anti-democratic elements in Anambra State to launch smear campaigns against our candidate, especially after the failure of the assassination attempt,” the PDP stated.
Attack Linked to Worsening Insecurity, APC Blamed
The party used the incident to highlight what it called the worsening state of insecurity in Nigeria, blaming it on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and accusing the party of failed governance.
“This attack on the PDP candidate is another sad commentary on the alarming level of insecurity in the country under the overtly insensitive, corrupt and rudderless APC administration,” Ologunagba said.
PDP Vows to Remain Undeterred
Despite the incident, the PDP declared that the attack would not derail its campaign or the candidacy of Chief Ezenwafor.
“Our message to the assailants and their sponsors is simple: you have failed and will continue to fail. Our candidate is divinely destined and enjoys massive grassroots support,” the statement affirmed.
Call for Police Action and Tighter Security
The PDP called on the Inspector General of Police to arrest the perpetrators and provide adequate security for its candidate ahead of the crucial governorship election.
“We urge the police authorities to act swiftly by apprehending the attackers and increasing the security around our candidate,” the party demanded.
Ezenwafor Encouraged to Forge Ahead
In its final remarks, the PDP encouraged Chief Ezenwafor not to be discouraged by the attack, expressing confidence that the party will emerge victorious at the polls.
“The fact remains that Anambra State is PDP territory. No amount of violence, blackmail or propaganda can stop the people's will to elect a humane, transparent and people-focused government,” the statement concluded.
