Senate President Godswill Akpabio has confidently declared that no political conspiracy can unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, asserting that the South-South and Niger Delta regions are firmly behind the President.
Akpabio, speaking in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, cautioned against any attempt to replicate the 2015 political upset that saw former President Goodluck Jonathan removed from power.
"Do not think that anybody can become President without consultation with people of the Niger Delta region. So the Niger Delta region has accepted President Bola Tinubu and found him fit to continue beyond 2027," Akpabio said.
He continued, “Let other people who are conspiring, they did it before to Goodluck Jonathan, this time around, we are saying the entire South South region, the entire Niger Delta will stick as one voice. And we are telling the President, on your mandate we stand. No conspiracy formed against this government that has recognised Niger Delta shall prosper.”
Akpabio praised Tinubu’s administration for what he described as notable recognition and development of the Niger Delta, highlighting the establishment of the University of Environment and the University of Sciences in Ogoni land to address regional environmental challenges.
“Forty-six years ago was the last time the Niger Delta produced a Senate President. Today, this government has recognised the region—not just by appointing me—but by investing in our future,” he said.
His remarks come amid rising political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Opposition parties, particularly those rallying under the newly restructured African Democratic Congress (ADC), have promised a robust challenge to Tinubu’s re-election bid.
As reported earlier, the ADC coalition has attracted a wave of prominent political figures, including former Senate President David Mark, who serves as protem national chairman, and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who was named protem national secretary.
Other notable attendees at the ADC coalition meeting include former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC Chairman John Oyegun, ex-Attorney General Abubakar Malami, and former governors Nasir El-Rufai, Liyel Imoke, and Aminu Tambuwal.
Despite the mounting momentum of the opposition coalition, the All Progressives Congress (APC) insists that Tinubu’s leadership remains widely accepted and unshaken.
Akpabio’s emphatic declaration appears to be part of a broader strategy to consolidate the South-South’s political loyalty ahead of what is shaping up to be a highly contested 2027 general election.
