A former spokesman to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has said President Bola Tinubu could face a tougher political battle if former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during a programme on Nigeria Info FM 99.3, Sowunmi described Jonathan as a potential “wild card” for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He argued that the former president enjoys wide acceptance in both the South-South and parts of the North and Middle Belt, giving him a stronger advantage if he decides to rejoin the race.

“Jonathan may be our wild card. Jonathan is the man. I don’t know because he has not confirmed, but he may be our wild card,” Sowunmi said.

According to him, Jonathan would not face legitimacy challenges in the South-South or the North, adding that his candidacy could reshape the political dynamics heading into 2027.

“But if Jonathan does come out, I can guarantee you that Bola Tinubu will have a bigger problem on his table and he will need a bigger strategy than the one he is running now to defeat him,” Sowunmi added.

He further criticised the current administration, claiming that dissatisfaction is growing in many parts of the country. “If you go to the far corners of the North and you hear what they are saying about Bola Tinubu’s government, you will cry,” he said.

While there have been speculations about Jonathan eyeing the PDP presidential ticket, the former president has not made any public declaration regarding his political plans for 2027.
