Senator representing Enugu East, Kelvin Chukwu, has officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Naija Blog reports that Chukwu announced his defection during a town hall meeting in Amuri Community, Nkanu West Local Government Area, citing the prolonged internal crisis and factionalisation within the Labour Party.

According to him, the lingering wrangling has made it increasingly difficult for members to function effectively.

“The protracted crisis rocking the LP, which has led to its fractionalisation, is seriously affecting its members,” the senator said.

Chukwu, however, thanked his constituents for their continuous support since his election, assuring them of his commitment to delivering effective representation.

Meanwhile, former Enugu APC chairman, Ben Nwoye, described the senator’s defection as a wise political move that would benefit both the lawmaker and the people he represents.

The development adds to a wave of defections by Labour Party members in Enugu. Lawmakers such as Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu and Sunday Umehia had earlier crossed over to the APC, also citing leadership tussles and internal crises within the LP.

The defections have further deepened concerns about the future of the Labour Party in the state.
