Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has disclosed that he will not contest the 2027 presidential election if a younger aspirant defeats him to secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket.
Atiku, who spoke during an interview with the BBC, explained that his priority at the moment is not personal ambition but building the ADC into a strong political force with national and grassroots structures.
According to him, if a younger candidate emerges during the party primaries, he will give full support and mentorship instead of challenging the outcome.
“I have not made a final decision on running in 2027,” Atiku said. “What matters most to me now is helping the ADC grow and prepare for the elections.”
The former PDP presidential candidate also addressed his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of planting loyalists in the PDP to create divisions, which he said made reconciliation efforts impossible.
He added that unlike the PDP, where his contributions were often disregarded, the ADC offers more inclusion, particularly for youths and women.
Atiku noted that the ADC has completed its national leadership structure and is now working to strengthen its state and local government organs ahead of the 2027 polls.
