The Director of Mobilisation for the Obidient Movement, Morris Monye, has alleged that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is considering contesting for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Monye made this assertion on Monday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, describing Wike as a politician driven by “absolute power” and hinting at his possible ambition despite his collaboration with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
“I see Wike taking the risk to pick the PDP presidential ticket and run. He will do his calculations to see if he can beat BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu). Absolute power is all he cares about,” Monye wrote.
Social Media Reactions Trail Wike's Alleged Ambition
Monye’s statement has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians analysing Wike's political calculations and possible endgame.
A social media user, @tottibush, dismissed the likelihood of Wike contesting directly, suggesting instead that the former Rivers State governor might back a strong northern candidate like Rabiu Kwankwaso or Bala Mohammed to weaken Atiku Abubakar’s base if Atiku joins the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“Wike would only pick the PDP ticket if he’s certain Peter Obi gets the ADC ticket, so as to divide the South-South votes that would ordinarily go to Peter Obi,” the user wrote.
Others questioned Wike’s national popularity and political positioning, with @omuocircle stating that Wike’s dwindling alliances could see him fail miserably at the polls.
“Wike hasn’t exactly been building alliances lately, and that might just land him in last place with the fewest votes. It looks like he’s working hard to please Tinubu, possibly eyeing a shot as his successor.”
Some users speculated about the possibility of Peter Obi returning to the PDP to contest again, while others saw Wike’s potential candidacy as a ploy to prevent credible challengers from emerging against Tinubu.
@Engr_OV added a note of caution, warning that a direct contest against Tinubu could politically annihilate Wike.
“In 2027, if Wike picks up the PDP presidential ticket, he will be politically destroyed by Tinubu. Wike’s confrontational and divisive style won’t survive the calculated and ruthless political machine Tinubu commands,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, other commentators dismissed the speculation as tactical scheming. @erickson_egbon remarked, “When he is working for him under his payroll?” while @SabinaNkiru said, “He will not dare. If he does so, it will be to prevent the emergence of a real candidate that will challenge BAT.”
As the 2027 elections approach, Wike's next political move remains a subject of intense speculation, especially within the PDP and Nigeria’s broader political landscape.
