Social commentator, Isaac Fayose, has expressed excitement over the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging Peter Obi to return to the party and contest for the presidency in 2027.
Atiku announced his departure from the PDP on Wednesday, ending his long-standing association with the opposition party.
Reacting to the development in a video message, Fayose described Atiku’s exit as “good news,” stating that his frequent exits and returns had destabilised the PDP for years.
“Good news, Atiku has finally resigned from PDP. I have been trying to suspend him for years, he no gree. Finally, baba don go — third time in 20 years! This is what they call desperation,” Fayose remarked.
He accused Atiku of grounding the PDP’s progress with his relentless presidential ambitions, adding that his absence would allow the party to regain stability and reposition itself as the leading opposition.
“Atiku’s ambition has grounded the party for too long. I don’t know whether he forgot something in the villa. In and out of PDP three times in 20 years — what a shame!”
Fayose also suggested that Atiku’s departure clears the path for southern aspirants, particularly Peter Obi, to contest without internal rivalry from the North.
“For the PDP, this is a welcome development. The Southerners will now have a chance without someone dragging their slot. I hope Obi can come back to PDP now because they have got a lot of spread.”
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, had previously contested under the PDP before defecting to Labour Party. His possible return to PDP, as suggested by Fayose, remains a point of political speculation as the 2027 elections approach.
