Abuja, Nigeria – Naija Blog – The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has denied the authenticity of a viral video circulating on social media which purports to show one of its train coaches on fire.
In a statement issued on Saturday, July 20, 2025, and signed by the Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the NRC clarified that the incident shown in the video occurred more than three years ago along the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor and does not reflect current conditions.
“We wish to categorically clarify that the incident in question occurred over three years ago along the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor. The video is not recent and does not reflect the current state of operations or safety on any of our train services,” the statement read.
Public Warned Against Misinformation
The Corporation urged the public to desist from circulating outdated footage that may cause panic and damage public trust in railway services.
“We urge the general public to desist from sharing outdated or misleading content, as such actions only serve to incite unnecessary fear, panic, and misinformation,” NRC stated.
“The circulation of false or outdated information undermines public trust and national development and should be strongly discouraged.”
Commitment to Safety and Modernization
The NRC reiterated its commitment to upholding safety, comfort, and efficient service delivery for all Nigerians, stating that it continually aligns operations with global safety standards.
“The NRC remains steadfast in its commitment to safety, comfort, and improved service delivery. We continue to enhance our operations in line with international best practices,” the agency said.
Verify Before You Share
In its final note, the NRC appealed to Nigerians to verify any railway-related information using official communication channels before sharing it with the public.
“We appreciate the support and cooperation of the public and urge everyone to verify information from official NRC channels before dissemination.”
The Corporation has also reiterated that its social media handles and website remain the most accurate and up-to-date sources for official announcements.
