The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle cannabis and other illicit substances into the Kuje custodial centre in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to a statement on Monday by the FCT command spokesperson, Samson Duza, the incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday during a routine search.
The suspect, identified as Njimogu Ikedi, allegedly concealed substances suspected to be cannabis sativa and other psychoactive drugs in his clothes while attempting to visit an inmate.
Duza disclosed that the FCT Controller of Corrections, Christopher Jen, ordered the suspect’s immediate arrest, after which he was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.
Jen also warned visitors with ulterior motives to steer clear of the facility, stressing that vigilant officers would always uncover such acts.
The spokesperson urged the public to support the service in fulfilling its mandate of reforming and rehabilitating offenders to enhance public safety.
The interception comes more than a year after a woman was arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the same facility by concealing them in food packs for an inmate.
