Human rights lawyer, Festus Ogun, has sued Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for allegedly violating his fundamental rights by blocking him on X (formerly Twitter).

Ogun said the governor blocked him in 2021 after he criticized the government over the October 2020 #EndSARS killings. He argued that the action denied him access to vital public information and updates on Lagos governance.

In a suit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Ogun asked the court to declare the governor’s action unconstitutional and discriminatory. He also prayed the court to order Sanwo-Olu to unblock him, apologize publicly, and stop blocking critics on social media.

The lawyer cited a 2019 U.S. court ruling that found former President Donald Trump violated citizens’ rights by blocking them on Twitter.

Ogun described the case as a public interest matter, stressing that intolerance of criticism is “unconstitutional and undemocratic.”
