A 32-year-old Russian woman, Mariana Barutkina, has sustained a serious spinal injury after attempting a viral social media challenge inspired by American rapper Nicki Minaj — just weeks after giving birth.
Barutkina, a new content creator seeking traction online, reportedly took part in the so-called “Nicki Minaj stiletto challenge,” which involves performing daring poses in high heels, mimicking a famous scene from the rapper’s “High School” music video. The challenge has become increasingly popular across platforms like TikTok and Instagram, often featuring creators balancing on unstable or elevated surfaces in stiletto heels.
In Barutkina’s now-viral video, she is seen attempting to squat on a precarious setup consisting of a baby formula container stacked on a saucepot, all placed atop a kitchen counter. While trying to execute the squat, she lost her balance and fell, injuring her back.
She was rushed to the hospital, where medical professionals diagnosed her with a Th9 compression fracture — a serious injury affecting one of the thoracic vertebrae in the middle of the spine. The condition may require extended rest, physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgical intervention.
Following the accident, Barutkina took to social media to share her experience, acknowledging the risks involved in the stunt. She expressed disbelief over how a moment intended for entertainment quickly turned into a medical emergency.
“Sometimes life tests us in the most unexpected ways,” she wrote in a reflective Instagram post, accompanied by photos of her hospital stay.
Her injury has since sparked broader conversations online about the dangers of viral challenges, particularly among postpartum women whose bodies are still recovering from childbirth. Health experts are warning that stunts involving sudden movements or pressure on the lower back and pelvis can be extremely harmful in the weeks following delivery.
The stiletto challenge has already seen a number of failed attempts, with participants attempting the pose on chairs, glass tables, countertops, and other unsafe surfaces. Though the challenge is often celebrated for its creativity and aesthetic appeal, medical professionals are urging caution.
Barutkina’s case serves as a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of dangerous internet trends and the growing pressure on new influencers to gain online popularity at any cost.
