Cunha to the Rescue! Red Devils Stun Roma in 3-2 Thriller

Matheus Cunha scored two dramatic late goals to propel Manchester United to a sensational 3-2 victory over Roma at Old Trafford, giving Michael Carrick’s side a massive lifeline in the Champions League.

Heading into Tuesday’s clash on the back of a grueling nine-game winless stretch, Carrick’s job was hanging by a thread. The atmosphere at Old Trafford was tense even before kickoff, with fans staging protests against the Glazer family by releasing green and gold balloons and throwing tennis balls onto the pitch early in the match.

Things quickly went from bad to worse for the home side. United’s defensive frailties were exposed just 11 minutes in when Matias Soule capitalized on a gap down the left flank to smash home the opener. Moments later, rookie defender Ayden Heaven was penalized for a handball in the box, allowing Donyell Malen to double Roma's lead from the penalty spot. The Red Devils walked off at half-time to a chorus of heavy boos.

However, the second half saw a completely transformed United side play with renewed intensity and determination:

The Breakthrough (58'): United received a lifeline when Matheus Cunha won a penalty. Captain Bruno Fernandes saw his initial effort saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vásquez, but referee Jesus Gil Manzano ordered a retake due to encroachment. Fernandes made no mistake on his second try, blasting it home to spark the revival.

The Equalizer (83'): As United piled on unrelenting pressure, Roma defender Leonardo Balerdi misjudged a floated cross from Fernandes, allowing Cunha to pounce and slot the ball in from close range.

The Winner (86'): Just three minutes later, youngster Shea Lacey fed Cunha, who took a sharp touch before hammering a strike off the inside of the near post to ignite wild celebrations across the stadium.

Cunha was sent off shortly after receiving two quick yellow cards—one for taking his shirt off during the frantic celebrations and another for a late tackle—but United held firm through stoppage time to secure a memorable European night and just their third win of the season.
