The Federal Government has officially renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, making it the latest major public infrastructure to bear the president's name since he assumed office in May 2023.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who said the decision was taken in recognition of Tinubu's role in conceiving the ambitious coastal highway project during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State nearly three decades ago.
According to Umahi, the vision for the 750-kilometre coastal road dates back about 27 years, long before Tinubu became Nigeria's president.
"The project was conceived during President Tinubu's time as Governor of Lagos State. Naming the highway after him recognises his vision and long-standing commitment to national infrastructure development," the minister said.
Latest Addition to Tinubu-Named Public Assets
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway now joins a growing list of public infrastructure, institutions and government facilities that have been renamed or established in honour of President Tinubu since he assumed office.
Other Public Facilities Named After Tinubu
Since May 2023, several major public assets have been named after the president, including:
- Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna: In March 2024, the Niger State Government renamed the Abubakar Imam International Airport after Tinubu, citing his support for the state's development.
- Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory Administration, under Minister Nyesom Wike, renamed the Abuja Southern Parkway after the president in May 2024 following its reconstruction.
- National Assembly Library: Also in May 2024, the National Assembly named its newly completed library after President Tinubu during its inauguration.
- Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC): In December 2024, the Nigeria Immigration Service named its command and control centre after the president, describing it as a major hub for border security and technological innovation.
- Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic, Abuja: The Federal Government approved the establishment of the institution in Gwarinpa in January 2025 to promote technical and vocational education.
- Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks: The Nigerian Army named its newly completed barracks in Asokoro after the president in January 2025, saying it was intended to honour his contributions.
- Tinubu International Conference Centre: In June 2025, the Federal Capital Territory Administration renamed the Abuja International Conference Centre following its renovation.
Trend Continues
With the latest decision, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway becomes at least the eighth major public facility to bear President Tinubu's name since the beginning of his administration.
The development is expected to generate public debate, with supporters describing it as recognition of Tinubu's contributions to infrastructure development, while critics may question the increasing number of public institutions being renamed after a sitting president.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway remains one of the Federal Government's flagship infrastructure projects, designed to connect several coastal states, improve transportation, boost economic activities and stimulate tourism across southern Nigeria.
