Tension in Kano as Sanusi, Bayero, Kwankwaso Hold Separate Eid Prayers

Kano witnessed a rare and symbolic display of division during this year’s Eid-el-Fitr celebration, as three separate prayer gatherings were held across the city, underscoring growing tensions within both the traditional and political structures.

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led Eid prayers at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground in the early hours, drawing a large crowd of residents and top government officials.

Among those in attendance were Governor Abba Yusuf, members of the state executive council, and senior security officials. The sermon at the gathering emphasised unity, peace, and harmony among the people.

At the same time, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, held a separate Eid prayer at the Nasarawa Palace. The session, led by Sheikh Kamaluddeen Albasa, also attracted political stakeholders and loyalists aligned with Bayero.

The message at the Nasarawa gathering focused on peace, stability, and continued support for leadership in the state.

In a parallel development, the National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, observed Eid prayers at his private residence mosque along Miller Road. He was joined by close associates, including the Deputy Governor and key loyalists, in a quieter and more reflective gathering centred on gratitude and spiritual renewal.

The unusual development of three separate Eid prayers highlights the deepening divisions in Kano, largely linked to the lingering emirate crisis.

The crisis dates back to 2020 when Sanusi II was removed as emir and replaced by Bayero. However, the situation took a dramatic turn in 2024 following Sanusi II’s reinstatement, resulting in parallel claims to the revered traditional stool.

Observers say the latest development signals unresolved tensions that continue to shape the political and traditional landscape of the state.
