[JUST IN]: Leaked Audio Exposes Alleged Police Misconduct, Sparks Fresh Concerns Over Detention of Whistleblower Nnamdi Emeh

Fresh controversy has erupted within the Nigeria Police Force following the emergence of a leaked audio recording allegedly linking officers to misconduct, illegal dealings, and a wider cover-up involving detained whistleblower Nnamdi Emeh.

The audio, published by SaharaReporters, reportedly features a conversation involving a senior police officer identified as Princess Nkeiruka Nwode, also known as “Ruka,” and an unidentified male speaker.

The revelations have intensified concerns over the prolonged detention of Emeh, a former member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who is said to have exposed alleged wrongdoing within the police.

Allegations of Cover-Up and Abuse

According to the report, the controversy centres around claims of an alleged criminal network involving officers attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS)/Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Awkuzu, Anambra State.

Emeh had earlier accused officers, including Inspector Harrison Akama and CSP Patrick Agbazue, of serious abuses such as extrajudicial actions and other misconduct during operations between March and December 2022.

A leaked internal police report further raised concerns, revealing that at least 11 suspects reportedly died in custody within the period under review. The deaths were described as “sudden and unnatural,” with no clear forensic explanations provided.

Investigators also flagged missing critical records, including custody logs and evidence registers, making it difficult to fully account for detainee treatment and operational procedures.

Audio Raises Fresh Questions

The leaked conversation reportedly contains discussions suggesting attempts to track and apprehend Emeh, including references to tracing him to his family home in Abia State.

In one part of the audio, Nwode allegedly expressed determination to ensure Emeh’s arrest and prosecution, accusing him of damaging her reputation.

The recording also hints at possible internal collusion, evidence manipulation, and the existence of sensitive information that Emeh may have used to protect himself.

Police Response and Conflicting Findings

While the internal report reportedly examined allegations of misconduct, it did not establish direct evidence linking CSP Nwode to severe crimes such as organ-related offenses or killings. However, investigators noted gaps in evidence due to the absence of independent forensic examinations.

Despite past controversies, Nwode was recognised as “Policewoman of the Year” in 2025, further fueling public debate over accountability within the force.

Sowore Demands Probe

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to launch a thorough investigation into the allegations and halt what he described as the “sham prosecution” of Emeh.

Sowore accused senior officers of collaborating with elements within the judiciary to ensure the continued detention of the whistleblower.

Family Raises Alarm

Meanwhile, Emeh’s father, Prof. John Kanu Emeh, has alleged that his son has been unlawfully held for over three years despite being granted bail in 2023.

According to him, efforts to secure his release have been repeatedly frustrated, with claims that authorities intimidated potential sureties and filed legal motions to block his freedom—even after a release warrant was reportedly issued in 2024.

Growing Tension

The unfolding developments have sparked nationwide concern over accountability, human rights, and due process within law enforcement, with calls mounting for an independent probe into the allegations and justice for all parties involved.
