The Delta State Police Command has arrested a police officer captured in a viral video shooting at the tire of a moving vehicle during a routine traffic stop in Asaba, the state capital.
The video, recorded on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, shows the officer firing at the vehicle outside Toscana Hotel along Okpanam Road. Though no one was injured, the incident triggered widespread outrage and concern over public safety risks in the busy area.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright, confirmed that the officer had been identified, summoned, and detained at the Command Headquarters in Asaba.
According to Bright, the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered a full investigation, describing the officer’s behavior as “unprofessional and unbecoming of a police officer.”
“The Command condemns his act in totality as no policeman has the right to use his firearm without recourse to Force Order 237,” Bright said.
“It is the duty of every Nigerian Police officer to protect lives and property, not to endanger them.”
He explained that although the officer was reportedly responding to a hit-and-run incident, his use of a firearm was unjustified.
The statement added that the Commissioner has directed that internal disciplinary action be taken against the erring officer in accordance with the Police Act and regulations.
“The officer has been taken into custody, queried, and an investigation has commenced,” the Command said.
The Delta Police Command reassured the public of its commitment to professional conduct, accountability, and the protection of lives and property, urging residents to remain confident in its resolve to uphold justice.
