Statement by Minister Diab on Canada Day

Halifax, July 1, 2025
– As Canada marked its national day of celebration, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Hon. Lena Metlege Diab, delivered a powerful statement reflecting on the country’s diversity, Indigenous roots, and national values.

In her Canada Day message, Minister Diab emphasized the importance of unity, democracy, and mutual respect. She reminded Canadians that the nation’s story began long before Confederation—with the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for the land for generations.

“Being Canadian is more than a passport or status,” she stated. “It means actively participating in our communities, embracing our diverse cultures, and advancing reconciliation.”

The Minister, who attended a citizenship ceremony at the Canadian Museum of Immigration in Halifax, also encouraged citizens to welcome newcomers and celebrate the journeys of immigrants building a new life in Canada.

As a proud Lebanese Canadian and daughter of immigrants, Diab highlighted the courage and hope that define those who choose Canada as their home.

She concluded by urging Canadians to recommit themselves to building a country where everyone belongs.

Canada Day 2025 was marked with ceremonies, reflections, and celebrations across the country.
