Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has expressed confidence that his team can go all the way in this season’s UEFA Champions League following their dramatic 2-1 victory over Barcelona on Wednesday night.
The Parisians, who came from behind at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, showed resilience and quality against Enrique’s former club. Ferran Torres had put Barcelona ahead midway through the first half, but 19-year-old midfielder Senny Mayulu equalised just before the break.
With the game heading towards a stalemate, Goncalo Ramos struck late on, exploiting Barcelona’s high defensive line to secure a vital three points for PSG.
Speaking after the game, Enrique hailed his side’s performance, insisting it showed PSG can compete with Europe’s elite.
“It was an excellent match. When you see two teams playing clean, trying to hurt each other by playing football, it is a very complete match,” Enrique told Movistar Plus.
“They Barcelona were superior until they scored the goal, but we recovered. Nuno made an incredible play. I think we were better in the second half. We played well. It was difficult at the beginning. The first 20 minutes were tough, and we made mistakes. In the second half, we were better, and we deserved the win.”
The Spaniard also singled out Mayulu for praise after the teenager’s lively display turned the momentum in PSG’s favour.
“Mayulu has a lot of power, he brings so much to the table,” Enrique said, according to Reuters. “He has a lot of quality and can play both inside and outside. I am very lucky to have him.”
PSG, now considered serious contenders for the Champions League crown, will turn their attention back to Ligue 1, where they face Lille this weekend.
