Spanish football legend Sergio Busquets has announced he will retire from professional football when the Major League Soccer (MLS) season concludes in October.

The news was first reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Friday, who wrote on 𝕏:
“Sergio Busquets RETIRES from professional football at the end of the MLS season! Decision made by Spanish midfielder… who’s leaving Inter Miami and professional football in October. Legend and icon of the game.”

Shortly after, the 36-year-old midfielder confirmed the development himself with a heartfelt video on Instagram, writing:
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”

Busquets joined Inter Miami last year, reuniting with former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi. Known for his intelligence, flawless positioning, and composure under pressure, he was often regarded as the “midfield anchor” who allowed others to shine.

His legendary career was defined by his time at Barcelona, where he lifted multiple La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies, forming the core of Pep Guardiola’s iconic tiki-taka era.

On the international stage, Busquets was part of Spain’s golden generation, playing a pivotal role in winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

With his retirement, Busquets leaves the game as one of the most influential and decorated midfielders of his generation.
