Former federal lawmaker and social critic, Senator Shehu Sani, has urged former presidential candidate Peter Obi to remain steadfast in the Labour Party (LP) despite the party’s internal crises and the ongoing formation of new opposition coalitions.
Sani’s advice comes amidst widespread speculation about Obi’s political future and the possibility of his alignment with opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, who are key players in the emerging ADC-backed coalition for the 2027 elections.
In a birthday message to Obi, who turned 63 on Friday, the former Kaduna Central Senator took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his advice:
“Happy Birthday to Mr Peter Obi. My advice, hold thy Labour, it’s the Devil you know. Don’t chase two rabbits at the same time,” Sani wrote.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and finished third, has since become a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly among the youth. His candidacy redefined LP’s presence on the national stage, but the party has since been marred by leadership tussles between rival factions.
While Obi’s name has been linked to the new opposition coalition that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform, he has consistently affirmed his membership of the Labour Party and has not publicly declared interest in switching camps.
Sani’s caution reflects broader concerns that shifting political alliances without resolving internal party challenges could weaken the opposition’s chances in 2027.
