Abuja, August 29, 2025 — The Labour Party (LP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently restructure Nigeria’s security architecture in response to the rising wave of violence and killings across the country.

In a statement released by Tony Akeni, the party’s interim national publicity secretary, the LP condemned the August 19 mosque attack in Unguwar Mantau village, Malumfashi LGA of Katsina State, describing it as “one too many.”

The party lamented that despite billions of dollars allocated to security under the All Progressives Congress (APC) governments since 2016, armed groups continue to operate unchecked in states such as Katsina, Plateau, and Benue.

“Despite the huge sums of money allocated to security since 2016 by successive APC administrations, terrorists continue to operate freely without the soulless perpetrators being brought to book and their menace exterminated,” the statement read.

The LP pointed out that the administration of Muhammadu Buhari budgeted over $9.9 billion for security between 2016 and 2022, while the current Tinubu government has also earmarked huge funds for 2024. Yet, insecurity persists.

The party further noted that although Nigeria is not officially at war, the country has recorded more deaths than Ukraine, which has been under Russian attack since 2022.

The statement also urged National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to rise to the occasion and protect Nigerians.

“The world now demands counter-insurgency strategies, crisis prevention, containment and management,” the LP stressed, adding that if Ribadu cannot live up to his responsibility, he should be sacked and the entire security system reorganised.
