The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a five-day nationwide warning strike to press home its demands from the Federal Government.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the General Secretary of the FCT Administration’s Association of Resident Doctors, Agbor Affiong, confirmed the resolution, which followed an online National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that lasted into the early hours of the day.
According to the communiqué, the strike will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, and will run until Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
“All centres are hereby directed to duly inform their hospital managements and continue to press home our collective demands,” the statement read.
NARD said the decision was unanimously agreed upon by NEC members after several unresolved issues concerning doctors’ welfare, including unpaid allowances, poor working conditions, and outstanding salary arrears.
The strike, expected to ground operations in teaching hospitals and federal medical centres nationwide, comes at a time when Nigeria’s healthcare system is already strained by manpower shortages and underfunding.
Resident doctors, who constitute a significant part of Nigeria’s medical workforce, have staged several industrial actions in recent years over similar grievances.
The latest action is likely to cause service disruptions in critical health facilities across the country unless urgent negotiations between the government and the doctors yield results.
