Abuja, Nigeria — A police officer, reportedly attached to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, has been accused of stealing the sunglasses of Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), during a protest on Monday.
Sowore made the allegation in a post on his official Instagram account, claiming that the officer, who was dressed in civilian clothes, took his Ray-Ban sunglasses during the #PoliceProtest held at the Force Headquarters.
In the post, Sowore wrote:
“This Nigeria Police Force officer, dressed in mufti, stole my Al Rayban glasses at the Force Headquarters during #PoliceProtest today. His superiors are shielding him. Please DM if you know his name and rank as soon as possible!”
As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not publicly responded to the allegation, and the identity of the said officer remains unknown.
The protest, led by Sowore alongside other activists, was organized to demand better welfare for serving and retired police officers in Nigeria, as well as reforms in the pension system.
The incident adds to a growing list of concerns raised by protesters about the conduct of some police personnel during civic demonstrations.
