At least nine passengers, including three children, have been confirmed dead following a fatal road accident on the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway on Friday, July 18, 2025.
The crash involved a Toyota Hummer bus operated by Borno Express and a commercial trailer, according to a statement by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Borno State, Usman Muhammad.

Seven other passengers who sustained varying degrees of injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.
Commander Muhammad disclosed that preliminary investigations identified speeding as the primary cause of the crash, leading to a loss of control by the drivers.
"Eight passengers died on the spot, while one additional victim passed away at the hospital," the statement read. "Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased."
Authorities have launched further investigations to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
The FRSC also appealed to motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and traffic regulations, especially on highways, to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
"The motoring public is urged to exercise caution on the road. Further details will be provided as the investigation unfolds," Muhammad added.
