Nigeria’s active internet subscriptions across mobile, fixed, and VOIP networks fell to 141.1 million in June 2025, marking a 0.3% decline from the 141.5 million recorded in May, according to the latest industry statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The NCC report shows that mobile network operators — MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and T2 (9mobile) — maintained market dominance, accounting for 140.6 million subscriptions, while internet service providers (ISPs) and other operators served 528,633 users.
Data usage still rising despite fewer subscriptions
While overall subscriptions dipped, data consumption edged higher. Nigerians used 1.044 million terabytes of data in June, slightly up from 1.043 million terabytes in May — which had already been the highest monthly usage since January 2023.
Industry analysts say this growth reflects the surge in connected devices, streaming, and online transactions, particularly in major urban centres.
T2 (9mobile) CEO Dinesh Balsingh noted that “cities like Lagos are growing at lightning speed — more people, more businesses, more devices,” adding that operators are investing heavily to expand network capacity.
Mobile lines also see a drop
Total active mobile lines dropped from 172.4 million in May to 171.5 million in June, largely due to a significant decline in MTN’s subscriber base. The company lost 1 million active lines, bringing its total to 89.2 million.
Airtel, meanwhile, recorded a modest gain of 36,316 new lines, reaching 58.9 million subscribers. Globacom posted the highest monthly gain with +263,028 new users, climbing to 20.8 million subscribers. T2 (9mobile) suffered a sharp loss of 236,238 users, reducing its base to 2.4 million.
