The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has filed a three-count charge against politician and online publisher, Omoyele Sowore, accusing him of false publication, forgery, and incitement.

The charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/374/2025, was filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja. According to the prosecution, Sowore allegedly conspired with his media platform, Sahara Reporters, to forge a police signal and publish false information about the police.

One of the counts alleged that on July 30, 2025, Sowore and Sahara Reporters conspired to commit forgery, an offence punishable under Section 1(2)(C) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.

Another count accused Sowore of forging a police wireless message purportedly signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the Inspector General of Police. The document was allegedly circulated as authentic, an act the police say amounts to forgery under the same law.

The third count alleged that on July 31, 2025, Sowore posted a fake police signal and other inciting materials on his Facebook page, intending to provoke members of the force and the public into mutiny against the Federal Government. The act, the charge stated, contravenes Section 114 of the Penal Code.

Sowore was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday. However, the case could not proceed due to difficulties in serving the charge on Sahara Reporters, listed as the second defendant.

Prosecuting counsel Wisdom Madaki informed the court that efforts to serve the media platform through substituted means—via newspaper publication—were still ongoing. He requested a fresh date for the arraignment.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the request and adjourned the matter until September 15, 2025, for arraignment.
