Senator Solomon Akku Ewuga, a prominent politician, lawyer, and elder statesman from Nasarawa State, has passed away.

Family sources in Akwanga and Nasarawa-Eggon confirmed the sad development on Tuesday.

Ewuga rose to prominence in Nasarawa politics in 1999 when he contested against Abdullahi Adamu, former APC National Chairman, for the PDP governorship ticket. Though Adamu won the primary, Ewuga was chosen as his running mate, eventually serving as deputy governor.

Following their victory, Governor Adamu nominated him as minister from Nasarawa, leading to his appointment as Minister of State for the FCT by then-President Olusegun Obasanjo in June 1999. He held the post for two years before a cabinet reshuffle.

Ewuga remained a strong political force, contesting the governorship again in 2003 and 2007. He later defected to the ANPP and then the CPC, where he allied with Tanko Al-Makura to unseat Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma in 2011.

While Al-Makura became governor, Ewuga was elected senator for Nasarawa North in the 7th Assembly. After one term, he attempted another governorship run but lost in the primaries.

Beyond politics, Ewuga was also a veteran journalist who once served as Managing Director of the Nigerian Standard Newspaper.

His later years were marked by personal tragedies — including the death of one of his daughters, a pilot, in a plane crash in Cameroon. He was also kidnapped and brutally injured, leaving him almost immobile for years.

Ewuga studied Political Science at the University of Ibadan (1974–1977) and later obtained a degree in Mass Communication from Stockholm University, Sweden.

He is remembered as one of Nasarawa’s most influential political figures, whose career spanned politics, journalism, and public service.
