Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s camp has opened discussions with former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, exploring the possibility of an alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A competent source confirmed to Vanguard that emissaries from Jonathan’s camp have already met with Kwankwaso’s team, with both sides presenting what were described as “minimal demands” in pursuit of a political deal.

According to insiders, Kwankwaso’s camp is pushing for the vice-presidential ticket as a condition for any alliance.

“While Jonathan’s team is not outrightly opposed to working with Kwankwaso, no final position has been taken on the demand,” the source disclosed.

Jonathan’s strategists are also reportedly weighing other options, including choosing a younger northern governor to galvanise youth support across the region.

However, Jonathan’s biggest challenge may lie in deciding the right political platform. While both the PDP and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have been floated as possible vehicles for his return, factional battles within the two parties could complicate matters.

In the PDP, some leaders are open to Jonathan’s comeback, but camps loyal to Nyesom Wike, now aligned with the APC, remain opposed. Within the ADC, Jonathan is believed to enjoy the loyalty of several key figures, though former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is also said to be eyeing the party’s ticket.

“Jonathan is both optimistic and confused about his chances in the PDP and the ADC. Some of his competitors still have remote control over both parties, making it dicey for him to settle for any of them as a platform for 2027,” a close ally admitted.

The source added that while the ADC, under the leadership of David Mark, had become a fallback option, Jonathan’s sentimental attachment to the PDP makes it his likely choice.
