A police officer was shot and killed on Friday near the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, before the suspected gunman was found dead at the scene, authorities confirmed.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said officers responding to reports of gunfire discovered a critically injured DeKalb County police officer, later identified as 33-year-old David Rose. Rose, a member of the DeKalb County Police Department, leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.

According to police, no other people were killed or physically injured during the incident, which occurred shortly before 5:00 p.m. local time (2100 GMT) near the CDC campus and a nearby CVS pharmacy. Multiple rounds were fired on the CDC grounds.

Authorities believe the shooter acted alone. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was found dead on the second floor of the CVS with a gunshot wound, possibly self-inflicted.

CNN and The New York Times reported that the gunman may have blamed the COVID-19 vaccine for an unspecified illness, though Schierbaum said it was too early in the investigation to confirm this. The suspect’s father had reportedly told authorities earlier in the day that his son was suicidal.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens confirmed that 92 children in a daycare facility on the CDC campus were safely evacuated and reunited with their families at a nearby school.

CDC Director Susan Monarez expressed heartbreak over the attack, writing on X:

“We at @CDCgov are heartbroken by today’s attack on our Roybal Campus,” praising the “courageous” officer who was killed.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also paid tribute to Rose and all law enforcement officers, urging the public to keep them in their prayers.

“We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center,” Kemp said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
