The national electricity grid collapsed on Wednesday, causing widespread power outages across several parts of the country.

Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO) showed that electricity generation plummeted from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to just 1.5 MW between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm.

Confirming the collapse, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) informed customers that the power disruption in its franchise area occurred at 11:23 am due to the loss of supply from the national grid.

“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hrs today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas. Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized,” the AEDC said in a statement.

Consumers have been urged to remain patient as authorities work to restore electricity across affected regions.
