Barcelona have confirmed fresh injury setbacks to midfield duo Gavi and Fermín López, dealing coach Xavi Hernández a major headache at a crucial stage of the season.

The biggest concern surrounds Gavi, whose recovery from a right knee injury has not progressed as expected. The 20-year-old underwent a high-intensity fitness test earlier this week, but results were unfavourable, prompting the club’s medical team to opt for surgery.

In an official statement, Barça announced:

“Based on the test conclusions, to ensure the best recovery effect and return to competitive condition, Gavi will undergo arthroscopic surgery tomorrow, with the club’s Medical Services Centre overseeing the entire process. A new medical report will be released after the surgery.”

Gavi has been out since the La Liga clash with Levante on August 24 and has already missed a month of action. According to Spanish journalist Alfredo Martínez (Cadena SER), the midfielder faces at least another four weeks on the sidelines post-surgery, extending his absence to nearly two months.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Fermín López also picked up an injury during Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Getafe. The youngster, who featured as a substitute, was seen clutching his groin after the final whistle and required immediate medical attention.

The club later confirmed the diagnosis, stating:

“Player Fermín López has suffered a left iliopsoas muscle injury and is expected to be out for about three weeks.”

The double blow leaves Xavi short of options in midfield as Barcelona prepare for a demanding run of fixtures in La Liga and the Champions League.
