Popular Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold, also known as AG Baby, has publicly criticized Wema Bank for using his name and recent philanthropic gesture in a marketing campaign without his approval.
The award-winning singer had recently received widespread praise after he rewarded several Nigerian students who graduated with first-class honors, celebrating academic excellence and encouraging the youth. His thoughtful gesture quickly went viral, with many Nigerians hailing the act across social media.
However, controversy erupted after Wema Bank’s digital platform, ALAT, used a reference to AG Baby and his giveaway in one of its promotional posts. The ad read:
“AG Baby no send you first class gift? AN No wahala, ALAT dey for you. Enjoy up to 70% off your fave brands this weekend via eVouchers on the ALAT app — no be crime say we no get first class.”
The post, seen by many as an attempt to capitalize on Adekunle Gold’s goodwill and public attention, immediately sparked online backlash.
Reacting strongly, Adekunle Gold took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out the bank directly:
“Dear @wemabank @alat_ng when this one start? You’ll be hearing from my people.”
His response hinted at possible legal action and raised concerns about the unauthorized use of public figures for brand marketing without consent.
As at the time of this report, Wema Bank has not released any official statement addressing the issue or responding to Adekunle Gold’s remarks.
