The African Action Congress (AAC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has condemned the recent demolition of homes and structures in Karsana, Abuja, describing the exercise as “brutal, inhumane, and state-backed assault on the poor.”

During the week, bulldozers reportedly moved into the Karsana community, demolishing homes, shops, and makeshift structures. Among the affected were women, children, the elderly, as well as critical community facilities like the chief’s palace and a church. Many residents have been left homeless following the demolition.

In a statement issued on Sunday, signed by the AAC FCT Chairman, Agena Robert Ande, the party criticised the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) under the leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike. The AAC accused the FCTA of conducting the demolition exercise with the support of armed security personnel, allegedly without due process or adequate notice to residents.

The AAC also alleged that there are reports of irregular land transactions related to the demolition, with some residents claiming they were not served prior eviction notices.

The party is demanding that the FCTA provide fair and adequate compensation to all displaced families and ensure alternative housing to mitigate the hardship caused by the demolitions. The AAC pledged to continue advocacy against what it described as the “systematic displacement and impoverishment of the poor by state institutions.”

Part of the AAC’s statement reads:

“It is unconscionable that vulnerable citizens, including women, children, and the elderly, are subjected to such brutal and inhumane treatment in a nation that upholds the rule of law. We call on the FCT Minister to compensate the affected families adequately and provide them with alternative housing.”

The party further urged the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to intervene by providing relief materials, shelter, and other essential support to the displaced residents.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, has inspected the demolition site. He attributed the demolitions to actions by a private developer, Oceanic Properties and Equilibrium Concept, which he
