Naija Blog— Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwaebonyi (APC–Ebonyi North) has claimed that Nigerian politicians bear heavy financial burdens despite public assumptions about their earnings.

Speaking in an interview with NewsCentral TV, Nwaebonyi said his salary as a senator is publicly available for verification through “relevant agencies,” but insisted it is far less than many believe.

“If I spend it with you within two days, you will agree with me we leaders are actually suffering,” he said.

When asked about total earnings, including allowances, the senator said:

“Everything put together… if I place it on the table with you, for one week, you will borrow money for me, you will pity me… the burden is much on us politicians. We are suffering and smiling. But like I said, it’s not for pity that we campaigned for; it’s a mandate we fought for, and we must use it to better the lives of our people.”

Nwaebonyi added that he personally sponsors some constituency projects not captured in the national budget, citing passion and the needs of his people as his motivation.

The senator represents the Ebonyi North Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
