The South-West leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially distanced itself from the newly announced coalition of opposition parties that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform for the 2027 general elections.

The clarification was made during an SDP stakeholders' meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where regional leaders unanimously declared that no chapter of the SDP in the Southwest is involved in any form of coalition arrangement.

Hon. Femi Olaniyi (popularly known as Ferrari), who chairs all SDP state chairmen nationwide and leads the Lagos State chapter, emphasized that decisions on alliances or coalitions can only be made by the party's National Working Committee (NWC).

“As it stands now, there is nothing like a coalition in SDP. Only the NWC can take such a decision on behalf of the party. Until we hear from them, we remain focused and united across the six states of the Southwest,” Olaniyi stated.

This response follows the high-profile meeting of opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, David Mark, and ex-governors Rauf Aregbesola, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, who endorsed the ADC as the central vehicle for a coalition ahead of the next elections.

Olaniyi reassured party members in Ondo, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, and Oyo states that the SDP remains independent and committed to grassroots development, with preparations already underway for 2027.

“In 2027, we will rescue Nigeria from the current administration, bring a formidable government, and show all Nigerians a true and real democracy,” he affirmed.

Also speaking, Hon. Babatunde Omotayo, representing Ise-Orun Constituency in the Ekiti State House of Assembly, stressed the importance of unity within the party.

“The most important thing we discussed was how to remain one and speak with one voice to move the party forward,” he said.

Other prominent attendees included:

  • Hon. Okunlade Michael (Oyo)

  • Barr. Gbenga Akinbuli (Ondo)

  • Otunba Yinka Ola-Williams (Ogun)

  • Alhaji Yinus Gbadamosi (Osun)

  • Hon. Ayodele Bamikole (Ekiti)

  • Hon. Bosede Ilesanmi, Deputy National Woman Leader of the SDP

The meeting concluded with a firm resolution to strengthen the SDP in the Southwest while awaiting official guidance from the party’s national leadership on any potential coalition talks.
