The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro Chapter, has accused the Provost and Medical Director, Dr. Agboola P. A., of unlawfully suspending a post-basic nursing student, Ogunjobi Samuel, despite the ongoing investigation into an alleged assault by a medical officer, Dr. Majekodunmi Oluyinka.

In a statement made available to the press, NANNM condemned the “procedural irregularities” that marred the panel set up to investigate the assault complaint. The union accused the provost of suppressing the panel's input, alleging that he single-handedly suspended the student and publicly declared that no assault occurred, despite admissions and witness testimonies confirming that Dr. Majekodunmi had used abusive language against Ogunjobi.

“Multiple witnesses confirmed that Dr. Majekodunmi called the student ‘stupid’ and ‘bastard.’ Majekodunmi himself admitted this before the panel, yet the provost still suspended the complainant without awaiting the panel’s report,” the union stated.

Inconsistencies in Provost’s Statements

NANNM further highlighted contradictions in the provost’s public communications. In one instance, the provost claimed that the doctor was issued a strongly worded warning, yet also stated that Ogunjobi was suspended for failing to substantiate his claims, despite the doctor’s confession.

The union questioned whether the Civil Service Regulations were followed or whether personal bias played a role in the provost’s decisions, especially since Dr. Majekodunmi is a colleague.

Allegation of Divide and Rule Tactics

NANNM also accused the provost of employing “divide and rule” tactics within the hospital administration. They cited a previous case where the provost allegedly set up a punitive panel against union officials following their protest over poor working conditions.

“Rather than address our concerns, he vindictively formed a kangaroo panel against us, stating openly that more panels like that would follow,” the union alleged.

Conclusion

NANNM called on relevant authorities to intervene in the matter, insisting that Ogunjobi Samuel’s suspension was prejudicial and unjust. The union maintained that the provost’s conduct was not only unprofessional but also damaging to the credibility of the institution's administrative processes.

They urged that the investigative panel's report be made public and that appropriate sanctions be placed on any official found to have abused their authority in the matter.
