Bayelsa State, Nigeria — July 18, 2025: Soldiers from the Joint Military Task Force (JMTF) on Thursday reportedly opened fire on peaceful protesters in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, leading to widespread condemnation.
The protest, led by Ijaw youth from Kaiama Community, was staged following the alleged murder of a local farmer by a suspected Fulani herdsman operating in the community's farmlands. The youths took to the streets demanding the expulsion of Fulani herders from their lands, citing a growing history of violence.
Shooting Caught on Video
A video of the incident, shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by influencer Chuks, captures the chilling moment when soldiers fired live rounds to disperse the crowd. The recording showed protesters fleeing in panic as the sound of gunfire rang out.
“The soldiers are shooting at us. Soldiers are shooting at us,” a protester cried out while retreating, as captured in the footage.
Witness Accounts
A protest witness told Sahara Reporters:
“One of our brothers was attacked on his farm and left for dead. Instead of addressing the killing, the government is using soldiers to suppress us.”
Despite the escalating tensions, authorities have yet to officially respond to the incident, fueling anger among locals and human rights advocates.
Historical Context of Military Crackdown in Bayelsa
This is not the first time the Nigerian military has been accused of using force against unarmed protesters in Bayelsa State:
-
In June 2023, soldiers allegedly shot and killed Ikiowori Benson during a youth protest in Sangana Community.
-
In 2021, three youths were gunned down by security forces during a protest in Otuasega Community, where residents decried government neglect of the Otuasega-Imiringi Road.
Calls for Justice
Human rights groups and community leaders have called for immediate investigations into Thursday’s shooting and demanded the government address the underlying grievances, particularly the insecurity posed by herders in local communities.
Current Status
As of press time, no casualties have been officially reported from Thursday’s incident, but tensions remain high in Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA.
