Owerri, Imo State — July 18, 2025:
A Nigerian man has sparked public outrage after sharing a harrowing account of police brutality and extortion allegedly carried out by operatives of the Nigerian Police Force in Owerri, Imo State.
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), the visibly bruised victim narrated how officers assaulted, harassed, and coerced him into transferring his entire ₦30,000 bank balance after violently detaining him on his way to buy food.
“They said I should enter their car, I refused, and one of them slapped me. They handcuffed me, hit me repeatedly, and asked me about my job and where I’m from,” he said, showing his swollen face.
According to the victim, the officers drove him to a bushy, secluded area, demanded access to his phone and bank app, and after finding no evidence of wrongdoing, forced him to transfer his remaining ₦30,000 to them before releasing him.
“When I gave it to them, they returned my phone, ATM card, and told me to leave,” he recounted, decrying the rampant harassment of young men in the state.
Viral Outcry and Renewed Calls for Police Reform
The video quickly went viral, prompting widespread condemnation from citizens, activists, and human rights advocates who are calling for accountability from the Nigerian Police Force.
This latest incident adds to Nigeria's ongoing concerns over police misconduct, despite the #EndSARS protests of 2020, which sought to address similar cases of brutality and extortion.
Police Response Awaited
As of press time, Nigerian Police authorities in Imo State have not issued an official statement regarding the allegations. Citizens and advocacy groups are urging an immediate investigation and justice for the victim.
