A civic accountability organisation, MonITng, has decried the deplorable state of the Gidan Koni Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, describing it as a heartbreaking symbol of rural healthcare abandonment.

In a press statement released on Friday, the group raised the alarm over the “tragic reflection of neglect” faced by underserved communities in the state, despite official claims of major healthcare investments.

“This facility, meant to serve as the first point of care for thousands, has no beds, no essential medical equipment, and no staff,” MonITng stated.

The group painted a grim picture of the health centre's physical structure, calling it “a disaster waiting to happen.” They reported cracked walls, a crumbling ceiling, and rainwater pouring into the building—conditions they say are unsafe for both patients and health workers.

Despite Kebbi State budgeting ₦2.9 billion for its Primary Healthcare Development Agency in 2024, only ₦955 million (32.7%) was reportedly spent, leaving rural health facilities like Gidan Koni PHC to decay.

“While a few centres in the city enjoy renovations and upgrades, those in hard-to-reach communities are left to crumble,” the group lamented.

MonITng further criticised government officials for dismissing concerns as political attacks rather than acknowledging the suffering of the people.

“Pregnant women deliver in unsafe conditions. Children remain untreated for minor illnesses. The elderly must walk long distances for basic care,” the group warned, highlighting the devastating human cost of neglect.

The organisation is calling for urgent and immediate intervention, demanding that Gidan Koni PHC be renovated, equipped, and staffed without delay.

“Rural lives matter just as much as those in the city. The people of Kebbi deserve more than excuses and press statements. They deserve accessible, functional, and dignified healthcare.

This development adds to growing public scrutiny of how state resources meant for healthcare delivery are being managed—or mismanaged—across Nigeria.
