The Dangote Group has expressed sorrow over the death of Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna.
Ruth, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, died on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m., after weeks of battling for her life following a road accident involving a Dangote truck.
Dangote Group Reacts
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Dangote Group said arrangements had been made to fly Ruth to India for advanced medical treatment, pending clearance from her doctors.
“On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time,” the company stated.
“Since the accident, our officials and insurance partners have been by her side, covering all financial and medical costs and supporting her family. Arrangements had been made for her to be flown to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance from her doctors. Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to live, we lost her today.”
The company stressed that safety, accountability, and compassion remain central to its operations, while pledging to further strengthen safety systems and support victims of accidents linked to its operations.
“May God grant her mercy and eternal rest,” the statement concluded.
Family Confirms Passing
The Otabor family had earlier announced Ruth’s passing through a statement released by Eko Solicitors & Advocates.
“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother on this 31st Day of August, 2025 at about 06:30Hrs,” the family said.
The family appealed for privacy as they mourn, adding that funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.
Justice Segun Ojienoh, representing Eko Solicitors and Advocates, confirmed that the announcement was made on the instructions of the family.
The Accident and Its Aftermath
Ruth was critically injured on August 13, 2025, after a Dangote truck hit her near Auchi Polytechnic, barely six days after her graduation. The impact of the crash crushed her leg, which was later amputated. She was also at risk of losing the other leg.
The tragic accident drew public attention after her sister, Phyna, cried out on social media, calling on Aliko Dangote and the company to take responsibility. She accused the group of attempting to shield those responsible for the crash.
Despite medical efforts, Ruth passed away on Sunday, leaving her family, friends, and fans in shock.
