Port Harcourt, Rivers State — Nigerian comedian and content creator Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, is being praised online for allegedly sponsoring the construction of a road in the Obi Nkita/Ali Agwor area of Port Harcourt.
A post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) shows Sabinus at the site with a road construction machine. In the accompanying video, he is seen engaging with what appears to be an engineer and other members of his team as they grade the road and fill potholes.
The gesture has sparked a wave of reactions from Nigerians, with many commending the comedian for taking the initiative to improve community infrastructure. However, the move has also ignited a debate about the role of government versus private citizens in public works.
Some social media users lauded Sabinus's philanthropy, while others criticized the government for failing to provide basic amenities, forcing private individuals to step in. A user with the handle @AjeboDanny commented, "The government will fight him oo. You dey spoil their campaign material." Another user, @iamurbanaira, wrote, "Nigerians will not hold leaders accountable instead they doing the work for them... Who is the local govt chairman?"
The actions of Sabinus have highlighted a recurring issue in Nigeria, where celebrities and private citizens often undertake community projects to address infrastructural gaps. The Rivers State government has not yet released a statement regarding the project.
