Outclassed by Barcelona, Yet Emery’s Villa Still Have What Man United Crave

Aston Villa’s 3-0 defeat at the Camp Nou was no fair reflection of the progress Unai Emery has overseen. Soaked Villa fans stood exposed for nearly three hours as Barcelona’s relentless press, led by Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, drowned their hopes on a night that ended with three gifts gratefully accepted by a side that had already scored 57 goals this season.

“There are a lot of things to learn today,” Emery admitted afterwards. “Overall we are competing fantastically in the Champions League; we have nine points. But today, we saw there is still more to do to get to this level.”

The opener arrived after just six minutes. Zion Suzuki’s loose pass put João Gomes under pressure from Pedri; the ball was intercepted by Yamal, who danced past Pau Torres and curled home. Similar errors followed. Villa created chances — a one-on-one for Jackson, efforts from Gomes, Manzambi and Cash — but lacked the clinical edge required in such an environment. Emery’s record at Barcelona now stands at one win in 16 visits.

Yet the result feels more like a necessary nudge than a reality check. Since taking charge in October 2022, Emery has built a sustainable model that has delivered Champions League football in two of the last three seasons and a Europa League title last May, all while operating under Premier League and UEFA spending rules.

That success has come at a cost. The spine of the Europa League-winning side — Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Emi Martínez, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans — departed in the summer. Emery responded with 11 new signings ranging from proven operators (Suzuki, Ruggeri, Goretzka) to players with points to prove (Jackson, Wan-Bissaka) and exciting young talents still being refined. The rebuild is still bedding in, but the structure remains intact.

Two players linked with Sunday’s opponents Manchester United illustrate the Emery effect. Victor Lindelöf, released by United, was transformed into a key part of Villa’s midfield during their European triumph and remains important this season. Tielemans, who left Villa Park claiming “there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them,” has since looked ordinary in a struggling United side.

As Villa prepare to travel to Old Trafford, the contrast is stark. One club is steadily improving on solid foundations, fully aligned behind a clear project. The other has spent more than a decade patching leaks. Even in defeat and soaked to the skin, Villa’s supporters left Catalonia quietly content. They have come a long way — and on current evidence, they remain the side Manchester United should envy.
