Mason Greenwood inspired a dramatic Fenerbahce comeback as the Turkish side twice came from behind to beat Liverpool 3-2 and end the visitors’ perfect Champions League record.
A chaotic performance in Istanbul was punished as Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi completed the turnaround after Alexander Isak had briefly restored Liverpool’s lead late on.
Nineteen-year-old Trey Nyoni opened the scoring with an excellent volley, becoming Liverpool’s youngest player to score his first Champions League goal and the competition’s second-youngest scorer after Trent Alexander-Arnold. The teenager delivered a composed display in midfield on just his seventh appearance in the competition.
Liverpool had been in control until Greenwood’s deflected free-kick levelled the scores. Manager Andoni Iraola’s decision to make five changes — resting Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo after a demanding run of fixtures — left his side short of cutting edge, with Bradley Barcola struggling as a makeshift striker.
Isak headed Liverpool back in front shortly after coming on, but Brown equalised within four minutes and Muriqi rose highest to nod in the winner. Liverpool’s defending was repeatedly exposed on a fractious night, continuing their recent difficulties in Turkey.
